"Salute to Veterans"

Writer's picture: DAV 5DAV 5

The students attending the National Student Leadership Conference in Hot Springs this week invited veterans to attend a "Salute to Veterans" night at Lake Hamilton High School last night. Several members of the DAV James L. Whitby Chapter 5 were in attendance. Fifteen states were represented with a total of 450 Jr & Sr high school students. The national anthem was sung beautifully by Evangeline Parker of Memphis. She followed with "God Bless America" and "Amazing Grace" and she received standing ovations for both. It was one of the best veterans salutes I have ever been to. The kids were awesome and the program was outstanding which included a tribute video about former LHHS graduate Navy SEAL CPO Adam Brown (1974-2010) and a short video titled "I Fought For You" (see Youtube) https://youtu.be/AgYLr_LfhLo . The program culminated with a rousing version of Lee Greenwood's "I'm Proud to be an American" sung by Arkansan Cory Jackson as everyone waved red, white, and blue glow sticks. Pre-program activities by the enthusiastic kids included singing "Y-M-C-A" and two rap songs I have never heard of but all the kids knew them word for word. (Ha, made me feel old). Gene Rasure danced to the kids amusement and delight. They also came down to the arena floor and line danced. After the program all the kids again came down to the arena to shake hands and thank each of us for serving our country. What a wonderful and memorable night. THANK YOU!"
